The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is an elite group of educational institutions in India that attract top students from all over the world. Where do IIT campuses stand in the world rankings in QS rankings? And where do Japanese universities rank in the rankings? In this article, I would like to share the comparison of IIT and Japanese university QS rankings.
How to estimate QS rankings
QS has been producing World University Rankings since 2004 with the aim of helping students around the world to choose the right university by providing objective, data-based information. QS college rankings are calculated from six indicators, mainly in four broad categories
They include academic reputation, employer reputation surveys, the impact of research, the ratio of professors to students, and internationalization (the ratio of international students to foreign professors). Opinions from the Academic Reputation Survey account for 40% and those from the Employer Reputation Survey for 10%. The number of citations/faculty index, which measures the impact of research, accounts for 20%, and the faculty to student ratio index, which is said to measure the environment of learning and teaching at universities, is not explicitly stated as a percentage. Finally, internationalization is measured by two indicators, the international student ratio and the international teacher ratio, each of which accounts for the final 5%.
Since internationalization and employer ratings are included as indicators of university rankings, it is not necessarily proportional to universities with high rankings = high quality of students. In particular, IIT has thousands of domestic students take exams every year, so the number of international students will inevitably drop. With that in mind, take a look at IIT and Japan’s World University Rankings.

However, looking only at the rankings, the top universities in Japan are rated higher than IITs, but this is a one-dimensional view, and the best choice depends on the content of education offered by each university, the direction of research, and the learning and career goals of each student.
IIT and Japanese universities both provide excellent teaching and research opportunities for students. Therefore, it is important for individual students to determine which college best suits their goals and interests.
