Hiring students from the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT): Case Studies of Successful Companies
Calendar 2023-09-14

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) graduates are highly regarded by companies all over the world and many companies have successfully recruited them. As a result, IIT graduates play key roles in a wide variety of industries and contribute to the success of companies. This article delves into the case of such companies and analyzes how the hiring of IIT graduates is affecting them.

Google

Google is the world’s leading technology company, providing services that are essential to our lives. In order to maintain and grow the system on a daily basis, many outstanding IIT graduates have been recruited by Google and their achievements have greatly contributed to the company’s innovation and success. IIT alumni work in departments and roles as diverse as Google engineering, product development, artificial intelligence, data science, and project management.

It’s not just that the graduates are active in the company, but there are also programs run jointly by Google and IIT. The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-Madras) has received a $1 million grant from Google to establish a research center for artificial intelligence, described as “India’s first multi-disciplinary center.” This puts IIT-Madras on par with Stanford, MIT and other global institutions that have their own research centers and are committed to the ethical development and use of AI.

This is a partial investment for Google to have a commitment to developing AI use cases. The purpose of the research center is to bring together researchers, experts, developers, community members, policymakers and others to ensure the accurate operation of AI, especially in India.

B Ravindran, head of the IIT-Madras Robert Bosch Center for Data Science & Artificial Intelligence (RBC-DSAI), highlighted the unique versatility of the laboratory. He also states that AI is already mainstream and used in a variety of critical areas in government and industry, with many stakeholders facilitating dialogue, resource building and research on responsible use of AI.

Google was the first major technology company to support the lab, and by interacting deeply with IIT students, it created a great opportunity to discover the talent on the ground that will help the company thrive.

Microsoft

Microsoft is a global technology company that provides essential services for everyday work, including Windows OS, Office 365, Azure, Bing, and Teams. The development and improvement of these products and services requires extensive technical knowledge and deep understanding, and the technical, creative and solution proposal skills of IIT graduates contribute to the improvement of product usability, performance and security.

Like Google, the Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE), an IIT Bombay body focused on nurturing entrepreneurship and technology startups, announced a partnership with Microsoft. The partnership is designed to help SINE startups by providing access to Microsoft software, services and resources.

Key points of the partnership include:

SINE startups have access to GitHub, M 365 resources, Azure training and upskilling, and a mentor network. It also gives you exclusive access to Microsoft leadership, industry experts, Microsoft Valuable Professionals (MVP), Azure influencers, and startup founders.

Selected startups will have the opportunity to participate in the Azure Community Program and Microsoft’s ongoing developer campaigns, including the Azure Developer League, Azure Blogathon, Hackathon, Open Hacks and Imagine Cup.

Microsoft and SINE will jointly select and onboard startups to participate in the Founder’s Hub.

Microsoft will provide SINE startups with flexible and scalable resources, including API integration with GitHub, visits to the Microsoft Tech Center in Bengaluru, regular in-person and online sessions, access to Microsoft ISVs (independent software vendors), and opportunities to collaborate with Microsoft and list on the Microsoft Marketplace.

This partnership is in line with SINE’s vision of providing an environment that connects knowledge and innovation to entrepreneurial success. It is expected to provide significant benefits to the technology sector, especially for start-ups focused on cloud-based technology solutions.

Amazon

Amazon is the world’s largest online retailer of business areas ranging from e-commerce to cloud computing, AI and digital streaming.

IIT graduates work in various departments at Amazon, including logistics, IT, and marketing. In the logistics sector, the technical knowledge and data analysis skills of IIT graduates enable them to operate Amazon’s supply chain and logistics network more efficiently, which helps improve customer satisfaction and reduce costs.

In the IT department, IIT graduates participate in software development and projects in AI, machine learning and cloud computing. These projects help improve the performance of Amazon Web Services (AWS) and enhance the capabilities of Amazon’s e-commerce platform.

Also in the marketing department, IIT graduates make strategic decisions based on data analysis and market research to help launch new products and run campaigns. Their analytical insights provide critical information to understand customer needs and ensure market fit for products and services.

Joint research with IIT

Amazon and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) have launched the Amazon IIT Bombay AI-ML Initiative, a multi-year collaboration to advance artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) research. The initiative funds research projects, doctoral fellowships, research symposia and other community events.

Key points of the collaboration include:

The initiative will be housed in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay and will focus on AI and ML in the areas of speech, language and multimodal AI.

IIT Bombay, one of India’s leading technical universities known for cutting-edge research in AI and ML, is collaborating with Amazon to accelerate the deployment of technologies and products in the AI/ML field.

The collaboration will promote innovation through community projects, research projects and fellowships to advance the field of AI and ML.

Amazon’s sponsorship of this initiative reflects Amazon’s dedication to addressing the complex research challenge of AI through deep collaboration with leading academic research centers.

The initiative will use India’s multilingualism as a learning lab to develop new AI systems that can learn and adapt to different languages, accents and dialects, and develop technologies that will be the foundation for the future of conversational AI.

Amazon and IIT Bombay have long had a relationship, including through the Amazon Research Awards program. The most recent award was given in 2022 to Preeti Jyoti, associate professor of computer science and engineering at IIT Bombay, for her work on fairness in speech recognition.
